How NeuroHR understands people

People aren't robots - they respond to work through their brains, instincts and emotions, not just logic.

What people really need at work

People don’t leave their emotions at the door — especially during difficult conversations, investigations or workplace conflict.

In our experience, people do their best work when they:

  • feel respected

  • feel secure

  • feel included

  • feel treated fairly

  • feel a sense of control over their work

When these needs feel under threat, stress rises and behaviour can change quickly. When they’re supported, people feel safer, more engaged and more able to contribute positively.

A Simple Way to Understand Behaviour at Work

We use a practical, neuroscience-informed approach to help understand how people respond under pressure, change and challenge.

One framework I draw on is the SCARF model — which looks at five social needs that strongly influence behaviour at work:

The Five Things People Need at Work

  • Status – Feeling respected and valued

  • Certainty – Understanding what’s happening and what’s expected

  • Autonomy – Having appropriate control over work and decisions

  • Relatedness – Feeling included, trusted and part of the team

  • Fairness – Being treated consistently and justly

When these needs are supported, people tend to respond more constructively. When they feel threatened, even small issues can escalate quickly — especially during investigations or difficult conversations.
